CLA Outcomes Conference 2025 · Dallas, TX · April 30, 2025
Middle leaders play a distinct role in organizations: they must deliver results while also shaping the experience of the people they lead. In this CLA Outcomes Conference session, Dr. Julie Armstrong explored the shift from managing work to leading people and why that transition requires more than technical competence. The session focused on the capabilities middle leaders need to influence team performance, strengthen culture, communicate across levels, and connect day-to-day execution with broader organizational priorities.
The presentation also emphasized the importance of developing middle leaders intentionally rather than assuming they will learn to lead through experience alone. Effective middle leadership requires the ability to build trust, coach and develop others, exercise sound judgment, navigate competing expectations, and influence without relying solely on positional authority. When organizations strengthen these capabilities, they increase the impact of the leaders who are closest to both strategy and the people responsible for carrying it out.
