Navigating Always-On Change with the Resilience Quad

The Journal of Leaderology and Applied Leadership · August 25, 2023

Change is no longer something leaders navigate occasionally—it has become an ongoing condition of organizational life. In this article for The Journal of Leaderology and Applied Leadership, Dr. Julie Armstrong argues that traditional change models, which often assume a clear beginning and end, are insufficient for an environment of “always-on change.” She introduces The Resilience Quad, a framework for strengthening resilience at the individual, team, and organizational levels through four interconnected elements: Purpose, People, Process, and Perspective. Purpose anchors people to something larger than the immediate challenge; People provides self-awareness and trusted relationships; Process creates a reliable way to move through uncertainty; and Perspective helps leaders face difficulty with realistic optimism and a commitment to learning.

Resilience, in this model, is more than maintaining a positive attitude or simply pushing through adversity. It is the capacity to continually cultivate—and then draw upon—the internal and external resources needed when uncertainty, disruption, and pressure arise. Julie emphasizes that all four elements of the Resilience Quad must be strengthened before a crisis demands them. By consistently reconnecting to purpose, investing in relationships, refining processes, and developing an optimistic perspective, leaders can help themselves and their organizations navigate sustained change while reducing the conditions that contribute to burnout.
